Core Creative Education has a broad range of wonderful creatures! They are here to teach us lessons in how to care for them, but also their interactions with students help with social, emotional and mental health. All the animals are kept within the Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare.
The Donkeys – Cleo & Elwen
Cleo and Elwen joined us at CoRE in summer 2017, when Elwen was 10 years old and Cleo, her foal was only 3 months old. Cleo is a cheeky girl, who likes everyone to hear her. Elwen is a calm, gorgeous girl. The donkeys are a calming influence for students who can groom them and take them out for walks.
The Goats – Shadow, May, Hazel & Thorn
Shadow is May, Thorn and Hazel’s step brother, The goats joined the Centre in 2016, enjoy going for walks and cared for by the students by collecting and feeding them willow and grooming them and checking on their overall health.
The Big Pigs – Percy, Petal & Pinksy
Our pet pigs joined us at CoRE in 2014. Percy is a lovely boy who loves to have his tummy tickled. The girls Petal and Pinksy are a bit more bossy! The students learn how to handle them, their nutritional and environmental needs throughout the year and how land management influences their care.
The Little Pigs – Diesel & Turbo
Diesel and Turbo joined CoRE over summer 2021, after a student spent a year on an ASDAN project all about pig care. We went to visit a pig farmer in the summer as part of his project and these little guys won us over. These lovely pigs are taken for regular walks throughout the day and a highlight for students interested in animal care.
Chickens & Ducks
The chickens and ducks are extremely popular with students. From collecting eggs, to handling, the chickens and ducks provide excellent therapeutic benefits to the mentoring programme.
Pygmy Goats – Yin and Yang
Pygmy goats, Yin and Yang joined the team in May 2022 at just 8 weeks old. They enjoy going for long walks and finding snacks along the way!
Halstock Hedgehog Rescue
We are lucky enough to have a rescue centre for hedgehogs at Limemead Farm. We incorporate their care into our Mentoring Programme. Learning about the animals, learning how to care for them, feed & weigh them.
CoRE’s flock of Sheep
Our sheep are lambs from local farmers that we bottled fed and have lived with us ever since. They help to manage the land, keeping the grass short and are rotated to different areas of the Farm. They are also very friendly and gentle and like to see what the students are up to.
Cats – Maisie & Max
The cats rule the roost! Maisie is always found on a lap of someone who may need a cuddle. She came to us from Ferne Animal Sanctuary and has many specific needs of her own. She is an intelligent and sensitive soul. Max on the other hand, is a bolder character and appreciates his personal space.
And all the wild ones!
Throughout the year, CoRE work together with all the creatures that live at Limemead Farm, learning about the various animals and creatures that call this their home. We always treat all the animals with respect and put them back where they were found, ensuring that their homes have not been damaged. They are a wonderful tool for learning about our natural environment.
